Unclogging a sink drain trap is one of the easiest plumbing tasks that the homeowner can do without calling a plumber. The sink drain trap is very important to keep odor from sewage coming back up through the drain system but can become easily clogged. Try following these instructions before calling a plumber. Many people use a plunger if their sink drain is stopped up but often the problem comes right back. I find it best just to remove the drain trap and unclog it. First place an empty bucket under the sink drain trap to catch any water or other debris that might come out when taking the trap off. Next use a pair of slip joint pliers to loosen the slip nuts. Once the slip nuts are broken loose, use your fingers to loosen them the rest of the way. Now use your hands to slide the slip nuts away from the connections being careful to catch any nut washers that might fall out of the slip nuts.
