Go to the start button and choose programs then choose ThinkPad and then ThinkPad Features or Configuration. Now double click on the Infrared icon, it will look like a half ball with waves going away from it. Choose disable then click OK. If asked to restart click Cancel or No. Next double click on the Serial Port icon, it will look like railroad tracks or a # sign. Choose Enable then click OK. Do not restart. Now go to device manager. You can get to Device Manager by right clicking on my computer and choosing properties. Remove the Generic Infrared port or Built in Infrared port and the Com port. Now restart the computer. Test the remote. If it still fails go back to Device Manager. Check that the Generic Infrared Port has a red X on it, if it does not double click on that icon and put a check in disable in this hardware profile. Then restart the computer.
