How Do You Troubleshoot File & Printer Sharing?
With the release of Windows XP, Microsoft introduced File and Printer Sharing into its operating systems. File and Printer Sharing allows the sharing of selected files, folders and printers across your home or professional network. You can set various levels of control over how other users can view, read, amend or access the various files and folders. If you run into errors, a number of solutions exist to fix the problem. Fix errors that occur when connecting using the “Run” dialog window. Make sure you have the “PCName” correct when trying to connect to a network computer using that “\\PCName” path in Run. If you know the “PCName” to be correct, try and connect via the IP address. To find out the IP address, click the network connection icon in the taskbar, then click “Properties.” Click “Details” and then note the “IP address.” Type “\\192.168.0.2” into Run and press “Enter” (replacing 192.168.0.2. with the IP address for the computer).
