How Do You Troubleshoot An Electric Motor With High Amps?
High-amp electric motors can be subject to a number of problems that may not be immediately diagnosed. A thorough examination and cleaning of the motor is necessary, and varying levels of lubrication, wire securing, mounting-bolt tightening and additional tweaks may be necessary to pinpoint the cause of failure. Cut all power to the motor. Disconnect the motor from any apparatus it may be connected to, such as a pump. Is there any chance that the malfunction lies outside the motor itself? If this does not seem to be the case, set about checking for the possibility of corrosion. If there are parts that show evidence of corrosion, you may have immediately identified the source of your problem. Rub down the body of the motor, but only when it is cool enough to do so–in other words, do not start troubleshooting immediately after the motor has been running on a heavy load.
