Motorcycles rely on air filters to prevent dirt and debris from entering the engine’s sensitive internal parts. A faulty, damaged or improperly maintained air filter can create a loss of performance—and it can drastically increase the risk of premature piston wear and ring failure. Here’s how to troubleshoot your motorcycle air filter. Visually inspect the air filter without removing it from your bike. Look closely for any obvious signs of damage within the filter media, such as tears or holes. Remove the air filter from the manifold or air box, and inspect both sides of the filter for concealed tears or punctures. Replace it immediately if it is damaged in any way.
