When Canon released the Powershot S400 in the spring of 2003 as part of its Digital ELPH product line, it was one of its most advanced compact digital cameras. The S400 offered 4-megapixel image quality and red-eye reduction. Despite its age, the camera is still in widespread use. Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix common S400 problems. Update the S400’s firmware. Canon released an update to the camera’s internal software at the end of 2007 to fix many commonly encountered errors. Download the firmware package from the official Canon Web site (see Resources). Double-click the downloaded file on your home computer and follow the on-screen prompts. Connect the S400 to your computer with the camera’s original USB cable. Turn on the S400 and turn the mode dial on the back of the camera to “replay” mode.
