How Do You Trim Dwarf Pomegranate Trees?
Dwarf pomegranate trees, like their full size relations, should always be pruned in the late fall or early winter after fruiting has finished for the year. Spring pruning can interfere with the production of flower buds and the accompanying seasonal fruiting. Under good cultivation practices fruiting follows five to seven months after flowering commences. Prune dwarf pomegranate trees more severely when young and more sparingly as they mature in order to optimize fruit production and harvests. Establish a good structural form for your dwarf pomegranate tree by pruning when the tree is young, non-fruiting and approximately 1 to 2 feet in height. Prune away all but four or five branches so that the tree form is symmetrical, balanced and the branches are growing in an outward direction.
