How Do You Treat Sciatica Symptoms Caused By Piriformis Spasm?
Sciatica is a symptom, rather than a condition. Sciatica pain (in the back of the leg and buttock) can be caused by a number of conditions. One of these conditions is called piriformis syndrome. It is where the piriformis muscle tightens up and impinges on the sciatic nerve. Rest from whatever activity has aggravated your condition. This may be running, driving long distances, sitting at a computer….. Try to stretch the piriformis muscle. This can be done by laying on your back with both knees bent. Place the ankle of the leg you want to stretch on the other knee. Grasp behind the non-stretching thigh with both hands and pull the leg off the ground so the knee moves towards your chest. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Try stretching the hamstring muscles too as they often tighten up as a response. Sit on the floor with the leg to be stretched out straight. (Bend the other leg out of the way!). Lean forwards from the hips until you can feel a stretch. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Try to self-massag
