When most people buy a puppy, they don’t expect to have to deal with any health problems, especially if the dog has received all of its vaccinations. And yet, shortly after bringing the puppy home, they may notice that it is suffering from rectal bleeding. This can be very alarming, but it doesn’t automatically mean a life or death situation. So, before you get worried, take a look at the steps below. Determine the extent of rectal bleeding. Rectal bleeding in puppies occurs for two reasons: anal irritation or an illness. If it is the result of an illness, especially the parvovirus, there will usually be an excessive amount of blood. The picture on the left side is an example of what you should look out for. If the bleeding is the result of constipation or diarrhea, there will only be a small amount of blood. Take the puppy to the vet if you suspect an illness.
