How Do You Treat Fish Parasites With Malachite Green?
Your fish being sick can be a sad and horrifying experience for even the most experienced fish hobbyist. Knowing how to treat your fish appropriately can mean the difference between life and death. The first step is identifying what your fish has and the second is proper treatment. Determine if your fish does indeed have an external parasite. Ick/Ich appears as small, white spots either in clumps or covering the entire body. Your fish will rub on items in the tank or across the bottom due to itching. Velvet appears as tiny yellowish spots. This is easiest to see with a flashlight shown directly on the fish. If the fish shimmers with specks or has build-up in the gills it is probably Velvet. Fish will probably scratch against the bottom of the tank. Other parasites cause loss of color, extra mucus production or may even have visible parasites. Scratching or rubbing on the bottom of the tank is also likely. If you have determined your fish does have an external parasite, Malachite Green.
