Colitis is the inflammation or swelling of the large intestine or colon. In the initial stages of colitis, dietary changes may be recommended. However, in long-standing cases of colitis, digitalis may be prescribed. Digitalis works by producing a positive inotropic or a kind of stimulating effect on the arteries that supply the colon, increasing the blood flow and decreasing the effects of colitis. Step 1 Consume digitalis tablets after meals. The dosage is directly proportional to the body weight (at a ratio of 1.5%) of the patient; for instance, a dose of 2.1 grams a day is appropriate for a person weighing 140 pounds.
