More than 100 products contain acetaminophen. It’s generally a safe drug, when taken in accordance to the instructions on the label. But, it can be toxic if taken in large quantities. It can also cause acute liver failure. If undergoing treatment, it takes about five days for the person to begin to quickly recover. If left untreated, the person’s liver can fail which can be fatal. Step 1 Call 911 immediately. Explain that the person took acetaminophen. Tell the dispatcher as much as you know about the amount taken and what time it happened. Give your address. Step 2 Dial the number for the local poison control center if the person is awake and not showing signs of symptoms. Step 3 Follow all instructions given to you by the poison control center or 911. This may include giving the person some milk to drink to coat their stomach.
