This is a suggested method for transcribing popular music by ear and generating sheet music. This is a process that requires the ability to read music well and knowledge of standard music notation practices. As with all musical skills this takes a lot practice to master. The more you practice the better you will get at transcribing. It is best to begin by figuring out the metrical form of the piece. Most (but not all) popular music keeps one time signature through the piece. 4/4 is by far the most common, but 2/4 and 3/4 are other strong possibilities. Once you have determined the time signature, count out measures, by keeping tally on a sheet. You may wish to conduct along with the music to keep track. Use your knowledge of music to start a new line of tallies when you arrive at a new musical section. Try to label the sections as you go (you may have to pause).
