Training a feral cat to use the litter box can be challenging. While cats are inherently clean, feral cats are typically nervous around humans, which can make it difficult for them to learn. Patience and careful placement of the litter box are the two keys to success. Choose the best litter box for the job. Feral cats are naturally wary, so using a litter box with a hood or one that automatically cleans itself is not a good ideal initially. Start with a basic pan style litter box. Set the litter box in the ideal location. If the cat is truly feral, the only time you see him may be at meal time. Place the litter box close enough to the meal dish that he will find it easily, but not so close that he will avoid eating. At first err on the side of putting it too far away.
