Money orders often go missing. The United States Post Office has a list containing thousands of missing money orders; many are added to it each day. Sometimes another party steals money orders and cashes them fraudulently. It’s important to trace a money order as soon as you learn that it is missing to prevent this from potentially happening. Go to the post office from which you purchased the money order. Bring with you the final receipt indicating your purchase and the receipt you separated from the money order itself. Also bring the credit or debit card you used, if applicable, and your ID. Acquire and fill out the Form 6401. USPS will charge you a fee (currently $5.40), which you will need to pay when you turn in the form. The post office will then trace the money order’s status. They will inform you if someone has cashed the money order, and who did, within five business days.
