How Do You Tile A Granite Countertop?
The classic granite countertop is generally made with one solid slab of granite cut to cover the whole countertop frame—a very expensive project that has to be done professionally. A less expensive alternative that you can do yourself is to lay granite tiles over the countertop. The tiles are set very close together, and the flat tops are evened out to give that unbroken, “slab” look. Unsanded grout fills the thin spaces. Sand the whole countertop surface with a hand-held power sander and 80-grit sandpaper, getting it dull and smooth. Clean up the dust. Measure the countertop to find the middle, and mark it. Use your level to draw a line at the mark from front to back, cutting the countertop in half. Use your wet saw to cut granite tiles in strips the size of the front edge of the countertop (generally, 2 inches). Spread thinset mortar along the front edge of the countertop with your notched mortar trowel. Set the first two cut granite tiles on either side of the center line. Put s
