How Do You Tie Chair Sashes Obi Style?
Adding chair sashes is a lovely way to dress up plain chairs for a wedding or reception. Even folding chairs can look elegant when draped in a cloth cover and tied with a sash. “Obi” is a Japanese word for the sash of a kimono. The term is used in wedding decoration literature but is not actually a type of knot. Various types of knots are used to tie an obi, but a simple one is lovely for chair sashes. Stand facing the back of the back of the chair. Place each hand on either side of the center of the sash. Align the center of the sash with the middle of the chair back. You will have to reach over the back of the chair, kind of like wrapping a towel around a child’s shoulders. Slide the sash a few inches to the right. The wider the sash, the farther you should slide it. Six inches should be plenty. Slide your hands out toward the ends of the sash as you pull it toward you and around the chair back.
