Understanding how to tie a Sheet Bend knot is the key to making two short pieces of rope into a single long piece that is as strong as the rope itself you started with. If one of your two pieces is thicker than the other, hold it in your left hand. (We’ll call this the left hand rope for the remainder of the article.) “Fold” the left hand rope back on top of itself a few inches from the end.
