I/O, or inside-out, throws are an important tool for competitive ultimate. While they allow you to throw the disc on a path that a normal – outside-in – throw would not, they are especially important in wind and rain. The wind catches the underside of the disc so by angling it the top into the wind you can limit its effect. Throwing directly into the wind – I/O is what you want. For a right-handed thrower, the I/O flick begins out to the throwers left before breaking back to the right as it nears the receiver. Grip the disc tightly in a traditional forehand grip with your index and middle finger together inside the rim of the disc. Pull the disc back rotating your shoulder and elbow to keep the disc horizontal, parallel to the ground.
