Knowing how to throw a controlled hook with a bowling ball is essential to generating power and adding to your score. A weak straight ball – or straight shot – will tend to reflect off of the pins, while a powerful hook will rip through them. Insert your fingers into the ball first, and then slide the thumb in. For right handers, hold the ball at roughly belt or chest high, with your palm facing up. This should put your hand underneath the ball right from the start. Place your left hand under your right hand to help support the weight of the ball. Keep your hand under the ball all the way through the swing until the time of release at the foul line. As the ball passes your left ankle, release your thumb first by simply relaxing it. It WILL come out, and all that will be left is your two fingertips in the ball. As the thumb releases, simply turn your fingers to form a “handshake” position. This is called “lift,” and will impart side-spin on the ball, which will in turn make the ball cur
