An antique treadle sewing machine is a great tool to use if you sew heavy materials such as denims. Machine quilters value Singer treadle machines in particular because of their ability to sew through several thickness of fabric. With the treadle you can better control the speed of the machine when you are doing fine, intricate work such as quilting. Unfortunately, many of the old Singer treadle machines no longer have their owner’s manual. Consequently, the directions to thread a Singer treadle may be lost. The good news is they thread much like a newer sewing machine. Remove lint from threading eyes, tension discs and needle bar. Check that the needle has no burrs or rough spots on it. Replace the needle if it does. Anything within the thread guide that can catch thread can cause problems in the operation of the sewing machine. Set the spool of thread on the thread pin so that the thread comes off the back of the spool. As you look down on the thread, it should be coming off counterc
