Not with Western mysticism; entirely with the eastern interpretation… Monster, is there such a thing in our culture? I don’t use that word; I prefer alien. But some people might have perceived it in that way. The common characteristic of all my films is my interpretation of them in the Eastern way. Only the shooting techniques are Western style. In this regard, “Semum” is Turkey’s first alien film. The lines in “D@bbe” were quite Western. So are the dialogues. There is what we call assembly and editing in movie-making. Hollywood has set the rules for this, as if saying, “This is the way it should be.” We thus have to stay in line with these rules, otherwise what we do wouldn’t count as a movie. A moviegoer may be able to tell apart a Hollywood horror film from a Japanese one. Will it ever be possible to distinguish a Turkish horror film from others?
