her tragic history ( she was raped while visiting her mother in St. Louis at 10 or 11, and when her family found out, they killed the man who did it to her) influenced some of her most famous poetry such as “i know why the caged” After her traumatic event, she took a vow of silence, and she literally felt trapped within herself.
