If you have a Windows 98-powered computer and you want to install Windows XP, you can upgrade the computer’s operating system or you can format the drive and install XP directly on top of it. A direct installation has fewer chances of encountering errors, but it will erase the data on your hard drive, so back up any important data before beginning the process. Restart your computer, insert your installation media and boot from the media by pressing any key on your keyboard when you see the message “Press any key to boot from CD” appear on the screen. Press “Enter” at the XP Setup Welcome Screen and then press the F8 key to agree to the installation terms and conditions. Press the “D” key to delete and format the Windows 98 partition and then press the “L” key to confirm this deletion.
