How Do You Test Ph With Ph Paper?
Testing pH is a very important measurement in the world of chemistry with many practical applications. While electric probes are more accurate, pH paper is typically sufficient for most pH readings around the house and even the lab. The first step in taking a pH reading is to be educated about your sample. Some samples let off nasty gasses, some are extremely reactive with air and must be sampled without opening your vessel, and some are just simple samples. Make sure to wear the appropriate safety gear (usually gloves/goggles and sometimes under a vent hood). Dipping the pH paper into the sample is NOT the correct way to test the sample. Something off the pH paper could get into your sample and contaminate it. Instead a glass pipette should be used for extremely acidic samples and a plastic pipette should be used for basic samples. This is because acids can eat away at plastic and bases can eat away at glass. The solution should them be squirted onto the pH paper over a waste containe
