Small engines, such as those found in tractors, lawn mowers and other landscaping machines, use a starter system similar to that found in cars. The small engine coil acts no differently then the starter coil in a car and can be tested in much the same way. If your engine has been trying to start, but is not catching, then you need to test the small engine coil to determine if it is damaged and no longer providing the charge for the plugs to spark. Pull the boot of one of the spark plug wires off its plug. Grasp the boot (not the wire coming out of it) and simply pull it off one of the plugs. Remove the spark plug you just removed the boot from with a spark plug socket on a socket wrench. Spark plug sockets are extra deep sockets that can fit the length of the plug and still reach the cast nut on the base. Turn the plug counter-clockwise to unscrew it from the engine.
