• Make a coil by winding a solid copper wire tightly around a cylindrical object about the diameter of a AA battery and about 1 inch from end to end, leaving the ends of the wire about 3 inches long. • Remove the coil from the cylindrical object and stand it upright on a block of wood. • Now, tie a needle or straight pin to a thread so that it balances from the middle and hang it so that it is suspended above the coil.
