How do you tell the difference between stars and planets?

0

Wait till our sun extinguishes. Then only stars will be glowing. Planets will not. Trace the path traversed by the sun and planets. If you see a fairly bright object near that path and it’s not twinkling (or not very much), then it is probably a planet. Planets are more brighter than stars. Planets appear to be in motion continuously and if you observe them daily then you will notice their out of sync motion relative to the celestial sphere. Stars have lesser intensity. The twinkle theory is good but not always correct. Stars near the zenith may appear steady. Begin your observation by locating mars as it is prominent. Perhaps you’ll need help if you are doing it first time , Use a sky calender. I would suggest stellarium software(free download).
