Garbage disposals are complicated machines with many sensitive parts. Often times after many uses, a garbage disposal will begin to fail. One of the most common problems with a faulty garbage disposal is leaks. There are several indicators of a leaky disposal; here are a few hints to help you determine if it’s time to take a closer look at your disposal. Determine if there is a sour, rotting smell coming from your disposal. Several things can cause this. One, the ground up debris may not be flushing through your pipes properly. If there is a leak, this will allow rotting food to sit in your pipes and the smell to travel. Another cause can simply be standing water under your sink due to leaks. Inspect the system itself. Your garbage disposal is under the sink and is a large cylindrical metal box attached the bottom of the sink. Check directly under it for liquid on the bottom of your cupboard.
