How Do You Tell If Food Is Acidic?

All foods are either classified as an acid or a base. Acidic foods have a low pH level. Foods classified as a base have a very high pH level and are considered alkaline. Although pH test papers can differentiate acidic foods from base foods, this is not the most accurate method. The most acceptable method of determining acid level in foods is through a pH test meter. Purchase a pH test meter from a store that sells restaurant supplies. Turn the meter on and insert the meter’s metal electrode into a cup filled with distilled water. Allow the electrode to soak for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer. Prepare solid food for testing by pureeing it in a blender. If necessary, add 1 tsp. of distilled water to the food to transform it into a liquid. If testing a liquid, no preparation is necessary. Insert the meter’s electrode into the food solution and wait the amount of time recommended by the meter’s manufacturer. Read the value on the meter to determine the food’s acidity.
