I have found it beneficial to begin the school year by teaching the students the literary terms they will need to know for that year and beyond. Then when these terms or examples of them show up in our reading, they are prepared and know how to identify them. It also helps a great deal on the state standardized test. My kids have made AYP every year. Read through the textbook and pull out any literary terms/devices you find that are mentioned and/or explained. Terms like genre, setting, theme, characters, conflict and others, as well as the different types of literature. Do the same with the novels and supplemental texts. Make your own set of note cards. For each term, write the term on one side and the definition on the other. Make one card for each term or device. Number the cards as you go. Create your presentation media.
