It can be very embarrassing to have a nice family dinner in a restaurant, only to have a child chewing with their mouth open, playing with their food, or talking about issues that are not appropriate for dinner conversation. The earlier you start encouraging table manners, the easier it will be for you to have a child that practices them. As your child grows older, you can gradually incorporate different rules at the table. After all, it’s okay for a one year old to play with their food, but the same doesn’t apply for a four year old. Start teaching table manners at an early age. Even a young child that still eats in a highchair can still have some rules. Allow them to play with their food, but not throw it or the plate on the ground. Show your children good table manners by doing them yourself.
