How Do You Teach Grocery Store Math?
Using the world as our classroom, the grocery store provides opportunities for using math, budgeting, and a general discussion of supply and demand and the economy. Sit down together and make out a menu for the week. List the meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Also list the household supplies for the week, such as laundry detergent, paper towels, etc. If possible, spend some time making a master grocery list on the computer. This makes future shopping trips much easier. If you have a budget for groceries and supplies, write that number on the list. Gather the sale ads for local grocery stores and any coupons. Go through the menu and check the ads and coupons for ingredients that are needed for this week’s recipes or the household supplies. Also, when shopping in the store, be sure to compare the prices of the store brands with the sale items and against the discount price with the coupons.
