How Do You Teach Expository Writing To High School Students?
By high school, most students have learned the basics of expository writing. As a teacher, your goal is to take their writing to the next level and help each student to develop a distinct voice. Don’t separate expository writing from other forms of composition. For example, exercises in imagery from a poetry unit can help your students learn to write descriptive essays. Rather than teaching expository writing as a distinct method in the way argumentative essay writing is taught, informally slip in expository assignments whenever you can. If the class is reading something written in the first person, have your students write an informal piece written in the same style. If you are studying speculative fiction, have your students write speculative pieces explaining what long term effects a technology or social trend will have on society. Include informal essays.
