How Do You Teach Density,Mass And Volume To A 14 Year Old.?

When I taught science I would take my kids into a small room. We would talk about the mass (all the students) and the volume (the room size) and note that we were packed together pretty tightly. Then we would move into the classroom. We had more space but could still bump into each other easily if we were all moving at once. Finally, we went outside. There was plenty of space for everyone. This was a great visual. They could clearly see that when the mass (the students) stays the same but the volume changes the density changes. They could also compare the states of matter – the small room was like a solid, classroom liquid and outdoors gas. Maybe you could try something like this with a group of friends or a box of marbles or something. Density is a pretty tough concept.
