• Explain to children why paying attention to certain things when walking is important. It always helps them to understand more clearly why something is expected of them if they know the consequences if they do not pay attention or practice basic safety precautions. • Teach your children the basic rules about being a pedestrian when you are still walking with them. You can practice the rules with them regularly while you are still walking with them, so that much of this understanding comes as second nature.
