How Do You Teach About Bike Helmet Safety?
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website, more than 50,000 children go to the emergency room each year from bicycle-involved head injuries. Teach students about the importance of wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle by reading books, posting information, and demonstrating the proper way to wear a helmet. Conduct a visual reminder of how helmets protect the head by dropping melons with and without helmet protection. Read a book, such as “Bicycles Have Feelings Too” by Barbara E. Scherz & William C. Smith, about bicycle helmet safety. Create a classroom bulletin board about bicycle safety; include information about wearing helmets properly, wearing light colored clothing, and proper turning hand signals (see Resources). Demonstrate how to properly wear bicycle helmets on the head.
