How Do You Teach A Young Child To Knit?
Basic how-to teach young children how to knit. Size 8 is the best size for beginners to start. I buy the needles in different colors, and then give each young knitter 2 colors. (There are a few companies who sell starter needles this way.) Then, when I am teaching them I can say “Use the red needle and……). The visual color difference is great, especially when the class has kids of all abilities. Some of the young knitters can’t remember “left” and “right” and this takes care of that problem. The first project is always a washcloth done with straight knitting. I teach them how to cast on and the basic knit stitch. During the following week, they can work on their projects at home. When they come back for the 2nd week, they learn to cast off. Then, they have a washcloth to use in the bathtub. Here is the simple pattern I use: Materials: Size 8 needles (2 different colors) Cotton Yarn 1/2 skein Cast on 25 stitches. Knit 25 rows. Cast off. Use the extra thread to create a hanging loop
