Teaching a student to set up a simple circuit requires an understanding of the very basic concepts involved. Electricity is the flow of electrons through a complete path. That complete path is called a circuit, and it can be compared to a child’s train track. Unless the track is a complete path, the train will be derailed. Likewise, a break in the path of a circuit will stop the flow of electrons. Like a small train track, the path must be circular. Show students the supplies each pair will be given, and ask them to draw a picture of a setup they believe will light the bulb. Most students will draw a picture of a wire stretching from the tip of the bulb to the positive terminal of the battery. Children (and some adults) believe that the energy from a battery can be drained simply by connecting it to a wire. Pass out materials, and ask students to work with them until the bulb is lit. They absolutely may not cut or strip the wire in any way. Eventually, each team will find a way to ligh
