Teaching elementary students to write poetry is easier than you might think. Children have wonderful imaginations. They love to create new things. Your role as an educator is to expose them to poetry. Encourage them to experiment and try out new kinds of writing. Read on to learn how. Bring in some of your favorite children’s poetry. Be sure to include sound poems, humorous poems, nature poetry and any other kinds of poetry you think your students might like. Read the poems out loud in an animated way. This will help the students to understand the poetry and to hear the music of the language. Briefly discuss the poems with your students. Don’t get too deep into them at first.
