Sewing is a great craft for kids to learn at an early age, and sewing machines are relatively safe for children to use. With some supervision and instruction, children can start sewing from an early age and complete beginning and intermediate projects. Sit down and teach your child how to thread the machine. Depending on the age of the child, you can either have them do it themselves or simply show them the steps and revisit this later. Start with basics and teach your child some sewing vocabulary. “Seam allowance,” “threading” and “bobbins” are some important terms. Teach them the important parts of the machine, as well. The foot pedal, tension wheel and bobbin holders are all key parts they’ll need to know for their first time on the machine.
