How Do You Teach A High School/Middle School Class Without Student Textbooks?
This is for the teacher who would, or must, teach a class without the use of a traditional textbook. It sounds scary at first, but can be quite rewarding. I have taught social studies for a number of years, and with elective classes, have not always found the right textbook. I was in the situation of teaching without that resource and found many good things came out of that. Student interest was higher, in my opinion, if the teacher is motivated to find their own information and spends time to do research and lesson planning. It’s not as difficult as you may think! Make sure you are organized, and have materials ready every day. This sounds like Teaching 101, but without textbooks, there must be information or learning activities prepared, or your students will find other, less productive, things to occupy themselves with!
