How do you teach a dog to stop killing pigeons?

Do not hit your dog to tell them no to something. Do not hit your dog at ALL. Especially after they’ve done the thing you’re trying to teach them not to do. It just confuses them more and they don’t understand. A dog only understands saying no if you catch them in the act, and tell them no as they’re doing it. Can your dogs go outside and back in freely all day without any supervision? If so this is what you need to target. The way to teach your dogs not to do something like this, is to make sure they don’t have an opportunity to do it.

I know a few people are gonna get upset, but this really works especially when you have a dog that kills chickens take the dead bird and get a good hold on the dog, then whip your dog with the dead bird, be sure to whip each dog you probably won’t have to do this more than two times, it’s always worked for me

You can’t train any dog when you’re not there. They are outdoors when you’re gone? Well, they’re entertaining themselves by killing small animals. What happens if the neighbor’s cat wanders into your yard? Keep the dogs indoors when you’re gone– always, always, always. They’re probably also barking their heads off and digging to China….. If they’re doing it when you are there, then you clearly need to take them to obedience classes because they should stop doing something when you ask them to. Obviously, saying “Bad dog!” isn’t going to cut it. Contact a trainer in your area by going to the website for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers: http://www.apdt.

You need to stop this now, they are predators and are hunting like wild dogs do. you can teach them to stop, you say you are at home sometimes when they kill the birds, then you need to watch them and when they head for one, you head them off with a good firm no, and keep this up……..don’t let them kill any more and if you are gone, do not leave them out to be able to kill the birds….they are doing what is natural to them… you have to head them off, and not allow them to make contact with the birds, I know this sounds impossible, but unless you want them to keep it up, you are gonna have to be faster than your dog… get your running shoes on, and head them off each time…… hitting their nose, is not gonna stop this, you have to be firmer, without hitting the dog, or making the dog afraid of you. you can make a mock pigeons, let them start for it, take is away and tell them no, no, very firmly, then let them get hold of the dummy bird, then take away from them and do the same
