How Do You Teach A Child Subtraction?
Subtraction does not have to be a difficult concept to teach. The opposite of addition can be made fun if taught to age appropriate children or those who seem interested or ready. Subtraction, like everything else that you want to teach children, will be easier if made into a fun experience. Collect, with the child, small manipulative items that the kid likes and can hold several of in one hand. Jacks, marbles and pennies or buttons are good examples. Clean a small chalkboard or dry-erase board that the child can write and erase on. You’ll also need chalk and white board markers. Children like color, so colored chalk and bright markers may hold their attention longer. Count out together with your child, ten pennies and place them on the table. Write “10” on the chalkboard. Move two pennies away from the group of ten. Write “2” on the chalkboard. Tell the child you have taken away (or subtracted) two pennies.
