Although the surgery to spay a puppy is commonplace, it is still considered a major operation by veterinarians. The surgery itself will remove your female puppy’s ovaries and uterus, rendering her incapable of reproducing. Before the surgery, your pup will usually be given a physical exam. After everything checks out, she will be placed under anesthesia for the actual operation. Generally, most dogs are released to go home on the day of the surgery. It’s at this point that you assume responsibility for your puppy’s comfort and recovery. Prepare a warm, cozy and dry bed for your puppy before you bring her home from the veterinarian. She will most likely be groggy from the anesthesia and will require a quiet, comfortable place to sleep. Try to remove any distractions and plan ahead for keeping any other pets you may have separate from your puppy. Avoid excessive handling of your puppy after you’ve taken her home from the vet. Not only may she be sore, but constantly picking her up may ag
