• Do not panic. When the lights are turned off, do not go running around screaming and crying. Just slow down and take a few deep breaths to calm yourself. • Gather the family. The first thing you should do is gather the family all in one room. This will keep the family from wondering what’s happening and from getting hurt or frightened. It also enables you to best pool resources, such as portable lighting. • Find sources of light. Try to find any flashlights, portable lanterns, or candles to brighten up the room. Make sure an adult lights the candles, as children could hurt themselves. Keep the candles in a safe place away from pets, kids, fabrics, curtains, etc. • Check the neighborhood. After your family is settled, check the neighborhood to see if any other houses have been affected and to see if anyone needs assistance. Alert the company. Call your electrical company and alert them about the blackout. The company will probably have the problem fixed within minutes, or will tell yo
