How Do You Surf In Western Galicia, Spain?
Situated in the northwestern corner of Spain, western Galicia is host to a number of surf spots. The rolling green hills are a marked contrast to the dry scenery that covers most of the country. Settled by Celts, Galicia has a unique mixture of Celtic and Spanish culture and should be explored in between surf sessions. Start at scenic Santa Maria de Oia, just north of the river dividing Portugal and Spain. This lefthanded reefbreak forms a heavy barrel with a solid swell from the north. Watch for rocks in the middle of the wave that become exposed during low tide as well as a strong riptide. Head along the coast to Rio Siera. Nestled on the edge of a peninsula, this beachbreak is always working. There are strong riptides, but no crowds and gorgeous scenery. Drive north to Malpica, near La Coruña.
