Often, a person with an eating disorder knows that he or she has a problem, but is embarrassed or afraid to seek help. Other times, a person denies that there’s a problem but feels that his or her eating patterns are out of control. Here are some tips to help approach someone who you feel is suffering from an eating disorder. Learn about the signs and symptoms of obsessive overeating so that you can identify them properly. However, be careful not to overgeneralize, assume or stereotype a person. Recognize that obsessive overeating has serious health consequences and should not be considered just a phase. Listen with understanding, respect and sensitivity. The person probably needs your attention and support more than he or she would like to admit. Be persistent and consistent in your approach.
