How do you strap a snowboard on top of a cars luggage rack?
The best way to carry a snowboard is in a snowboard or ski compartment, such as a Thule box, which you can affix to your car fairly easily. They can be fairly expensive, however. The next best method is to buy a snowboard or ski rack, also made by Thule as well as other companies. They are less expensive but leave your gear exposed to the elements as you drive. If you don’t have the money for a box or a rack but you have the old fashioned luggage bars on the top of the bar, there is a third option. Slide one end of your snowboard under the front bar and one end under the rear bar. Use some rope or bungee cords to secure your snowboard in place so that it doesn’t shift or slide, which can cause damage to the board, and so that it doesn’t slip out of the rack and fly off the roof of your car while you’re driving. Rope tends to work better, if secured properly, as bungee cords always run a risk of coming unhooked, no matter how securely they are attached. Whether you are using a rack or securing your snowboard to luggage bars, remember that your snowboard is exposed. Avoid driving under low hanging trees or other obstacles that might damage your gear.
Another option, if you have enough room, is to simply stow your snowboard inside the car. They fit nicely between the passenger seat and the passenger side wall of the car, with a binding in front of the seat and a binding behind the seat.
You could use bungie cords, but the best way to carry and lock up a snowboard on top of the car is a Thule snowboard rack – I have one of these and it clamps to yours existing rack and you can tote and lock up to 4 boards http://www.orsracksdirect.com/thule-575.… About $100 (I bought mine used on eBay for $40) and very nice.
