Properly maintained and stored, cast iron pans last a lifetime. But though cast iron provides a durable and wonderfully heat-conductive cooking surface, it is vulnerable in some ways and does require some special care. If not treated properly, uncoated cast iron can rust and crack. If you notice cracks or chips in a cast iron pan, it will need to be replaced. But with the right care, your pans can provide you (and your family) with literally generations of good cooking. Wait for the pans to cool completely after cooking. Allow at least 1 hour after cooking, as cast iron remains hot for a long time after use. Wash the pans quickly in a small amount of liquid dishwasher soap and water to remove any residue from cooking which could turn rancid in storage. Do not soak the pans, and be sure to completely rinse away all of the soap off of the pans’ surfaces.
